Client: Library Addition
Touches of warm craftsman style have updated the two-story classic contemporary. What once was a soaring entry and two-story great room has been “capped” with an efficient and modern loft workspace for the homeowners. This added approximately 400 sf of additional living space within the existing footprint of the home.
Restful views of the adjacent wooded area behind the house still dominate both spaces, but the great room’s focal wall has been transformed with the clean lines of floating shelves for treasured art and books, cherry cabinetry and a surround-sound flat screen television inset in rough-textured charcoal porcelain tile above an energy-efficient gas fireplace. Craftsman-style cherry crown molding caps the kitchen cabinetry to carry the look to that adjacent gathering place.
Iron railings and craftsman newel posts at the entry stairwell lead to the spacious new library and office in the lofty space at the top of the stairs. Facing walls of built-in book shelves and cabinetry topped with work surface are flanked by glass on three sides. Not only does the new room open to outdoors for views and air flow, but massive interior sliding glass doors bring visual and physical access to the stairwell and upstairs living spaces.
