A Home That Grew to Fit Their Life

Chad and Lisa had been living above a dark, disconnected crawl space and bathing in a bathroom stuck in the early 2000s. Over two transformative phases, our team helped them unlock more than 50% additional living space beneath their feet, and then turned their outdated primary bathroom into a serene, personal wellness retreat.

Award Winning Remodel

The results didn’t go unnoticed. The crawl space conversion earned THE Remodel Group an Oregon Home Structure + Style Award for Remodel, and the custom sauna was later featured on Houzz as an example of one of 2025’s top design trends: the bathroom as a personal wellness retreat

“This space strikes a perfect balance between bold artistry and serene calm, with warm cedar, jewel-toned shower tiles, earthy floors, and Art Deco-inspired hexagons working in harmony.”

— Kaitlyn Danna, Lead Designer

Potential Was There. Comfort Wasn't.

Two Phases, One Clear Vision

The Features That Made It Their Happy Place

A Multi-Use Lower Level, Born from a Crawl Space

What was once an inaccessible dark cave beneath the house is now a fully realized lower level complete with a bedroom, bathroom, gym, family room, shuffleboard court, bar, and dry storage, giving the whole family room to breathe, play, and gather.

A Game Room with a One-of-a-Kind Live Edge Bar

Three slabs from the same tree were hand-selected with Chad and Lisa, two of them book-matched and seamed at a narrow point so the long span reads as a single, sweeping piece. The third was mounted on custom supports as a floating bar, with a backlit liquor collection turned into a true focal point of the room.

Shuffleboard Table

The game room was designed with enough space to accommodate a regulation-length shuffleboard table, making it the kind of room guests never want to leave.

A Fully Custom Cedar Sauna

Rather than reaching for a prefabricated kit, the team designed and built a multi-person sauna entirely from scratch, clad in rich cedar boards and enclosed by floor-to-ceiling tempered glass that floods the main bathroom with natural light. A programmable heater lets them set the start time in advance, so their retreat is warm and waiting.

Transom Window in the Sauna

A fixed transom window replaced the original slider, bringing natural light into the sauna while maintaining comfortable seated sightlines along the longer bench.

A Shower That Finally Feels Like Theirs

The shower was extended 12 inches into the room and rebuilt as a tile-wrapped enclosure sized comfortably for two. Deep-green wall tiles and art deco-inspired hex floors bring a jewel-toned richness to the space, while the curbless entry makes it effortless.

Phase 1: Crawl Space Conversion

Custom Tile Work

Field tiles in the basement bathroom were custom-cut and interspersed with hand-placed glass accent tiles for a one-of-a-kind result.

Touch-Latch Storage Door

The basement storage access was relocated to the central hallway and fitted with touch-latch hardware, making the door disappear into the wall and restoring space for artwork and family photos.

Variegated LVP Flooring

Throughout the lower level, multi-width LVP planks were sorted by size and color and carefully integrated for a polished, cohesive finish.

Dry Storage

Dedicated dry storage was built into the lower level, giving the household a proper, organized home for the items that previously had nowhere to go.

Phase 2: Primary Suite Remodel

Heated Floors

The existing dedicated circuit from the removed jetted tub was repurposed to power radiant heated floors, a budget-smart upgrade that makes every morning a little warmer.

Quartz Countertops

New quartz countertops replaced the old tile surfaces, eliminating grout lines on the vanity top and backsplash for a cleaner, more timeless look.

Refinished Cabinetry

Rather than replacing the existing bathroom cabinets, they were sanded and repainted, then paired with new hardware for a fresh, cohesive finish that kept the budget focused where it mattered most.

LED Lighting Upgrades

Lighting was updated with energy-efficient LED fixtures, with added illumination in previously shadowed areas like the toilet closet and shower.

The Same Home. A Completely Different Life.

Two phases, one vision, and a house Chad and Lisa barely recognize, in the best possible way. The dark cave beneath their floors is now a vibrant gathering place where their family plays, their guests linger, and everyday life has room to expand. Upstairs, a bathroom that once felt like a relic has become the quiet, restorative retreat they always deserved, with warm cedar, jewel-toned tiles, and a sauna ready and waiting at the touch of a button.
